STILL TIME TO FILE FOR STIMULUS REBATES:  You have until Oct. 15th to file with IRS for the stimulus payment – you can get $300 or more.  An estimated 20 million people who normally do not file tax returns with IRS are eligible for the payment.  Almost half of these have not yet filed the necessary form to obtain the payment.  You may be eligible if you received at least $3000 in Social Security benefits, veteran’s benefits, certain railroad retirement benefits or earned income in 2007 – or any combination of these sources.

You can apply for the payment by filing a simplified version of the 1040A form.  Call Infoline at 211 or IRS at (800) 829-1040 for the local volunteer site (VITA) if you need assistance with the form

REMINDER - ELDERLY OR DISABLED RENTERS’ TAX RELIEF PROGRAM:  May 15 through September 15 is the filing period for the Elderly or Disabled Tax Renters Rebate.  An applicant must have been a Connecticut resident for any 12 months period prior to applying, have reached the age of 65 by December 31, 2007 or be considered disabled by Social Security standards.  Qualifying income must not exceed $29,800 if unmarried or $36,500 if married.

Income and expenses for the year 2007 are used to calculate the rebate amount.  For additional information and to set up an appointment, please call the Social Services Office at 775-7312.
