The First Selectman is the full-time chief executive and administrative officer responsible for day-to-day operation of town government. He or she is also an ex-officio member of all Boards and Commissions. The Board of Selectmen established administrative and personnel policies of the town government and execute town ordinances, regulations and policies.

The Finance Department is responsible for cash management, Capital Assets and debt administration, Risk management, internal auditing, Town-wide payroll processing, worker's compensation, and pension administration.

The mission of the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department is the preservation of life and property in the Town of Brookfield against the ravages of fire.

The Land Use department deals with residential and commercial permitting and is the contact point for the following departments:

The Parks & Recreation Department actually consists of two different components of Leisure Services. Recreational programming & our Parks / School Grounds Department.
It is the Recreation Departments responsibility to develop and offer a wide variety of quality recreational, educational, cultural, and special events to the public at the lowest possible cost while servicing all age groups in the Town. All of our programs and our Town Beach run on what is referred to as a self-sustaining account that means exactly that. All fees collected are applied to the total cost of the programs, including: instructor salaries, facility rentals, program supplies, brochure printing and mailing, as well as our Department’s F/T Administrative Assistant.
Our Parks Maintenance Crew continues to improve the quality of their daily maintenance routines while also increasing productivity. Our department maintains over 725 acres of municipal land. These include 10 parks, 18 ball fields, 4 schools, the municipal complex, police station, fire stations, library, and several traffic islands.
It is this Departments responsibility to maintain over 725 acres of Municipal Land including 4 schools, 10 Parks, 18 ball fields, the Municipal center grounds, and several traffic islands.
Our daily routine maintenance includes
- mowing & lawn care at all parks, schools, and Municipally owned properties,
- trash removal from our schools, parks, municipal center and all town owned properties & parking lots
- grading & lining ball fields for all school sports and recreational leagues,
- cleaning & maintenance of comfort stations
- Maintenance to all playgrounds, sport courts, signs, flower beds, trees
- Response to work orders from schools / public works Dept.
- Seasonal duties include;
- leaf removal at these facilities,
- snow removal at Schools, police dept, fire Dept’s, municipal complex, parking lots,
- Winterizing seasonal buildings & irrigation systems as well as getting them ready for spring.

The Brookfield Police Department is charged with the protection of life and property, the preservation of public peace, the prevention and detection of crime, the apprehension of offenders and the enforcement of State and local laws and ordinances, as well as the countless calls for service that the Police Department handles on a daily basis.

Probate Courts have jurisdiction over a wide variety of matters including: Trusts and Estates, Guardians, Conservators, Civil Commitment, Family and children’s’ matters, and other matters. The people of Brookfield elect a Judge of Probate, every four years, when the Governor is elected. Judges of Probate are considered state officials because the Office of Judge of Probate is mentioned specifically in the Connecticut Constitution.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) reports to the First Selectman. It is responsible for all matters involved in the construction, development and maintenance of the physical properties of the town, except for the design and maintenance of school property. The department is also responsible for the maintance of all town roads.

The Voters Registration office is responsible for registering voters and maintaining files concerning voter records. They are in charge of staffing poll workers and answering any questions on the days of election and referendums.

Provides the following classess/instruction for all residents 55 and older: various crafts, painting, piano, ceramics, quilting, computer instruction, bridge, poetry, aerobics, yoga, tai chi, country western line dancing, square dancing.

The mission of the Department of Social Services is to protect and promote the welfare of individuals and the community through support and services that maximize competency, independence, and quality of life.

The primary function of the Tax Collector's Office is to collect real estate taxes, personal property taxes, motor vehicle taxes.

The Town Clerk's office is the official State recording agency for the Town. This includes vital statistics (marriage, birth, death) records, hunting & fishing permits and all documents related to ownership of real property.

The Water Polution Control Authory is charged with the operation and maintenance of the municipal sewer system. The sewer system, which discharges into the Danbury treatment plant, encompasses all of the commercial property on Federal Road. as well as several multi-family residential properties.
